In Mold Labeling (IML)

In Mold Labeling (IML) is an advanced manufacturing technology that combines injection molding and labeling of the package in a single process.

In this type of production system, the label is placed inside an open mold (1) with the help of a robot or automation system (2). Subsequently, the mold is closed (3) and the plastic resin is injected into the mold (4). As a result, the injected plastic material fuses with the label, becoming an integral part of the obtained package (5).

Among the advantages of this type of labeling, it is worth mentioning that the packaging obtained is 100% recyclable. The label can reach a high quality of printing and finishing, allowing for greater differentiation. In addition, it will not be necessary to add labeling machinery to the production line, since it is all done in the same process. This saves plant space, energy and labor, reducing the total cost of manufacturing.

Currently, IML in the food and beverage industry is used in butter/margarine containers, ice cream or yogurt pails, etc. It is also used in the cosmetics industry in shampoo or cream containers, among others.
