When preforms are injected, either for own consumption or to supply third parties, the problem of their storage arises. Traditionally there are two main alternatives, octabins or cardboard boxes placed on pallets (one-way, the container does not return to the manufacturer) or wire mesh containers (reusable option).
The latter consist of a metal frame with polypropylene (PP) liners placed inside, which are available in different colors and can be sold separately.
The advantages of wire mesh baskets over octabins are as follows:
Wire mesh baskets are reusable. This makes them recommendable from both an economic and environmental point of view.
They can be easily used with forklifts without the need for pallets.
They have a long service life (between 3 and 5 years depending on conditions of use).
They can be folded to reduce storage space when not in use or when returning to the manufacturer.
Considering both alternatives, PET Packaging Network finds wire mesh containers a better solution, as long as they are not for export and can be reused. Even if they are used for exports, they could be reused but it would involve planning the logistics for them to be shipped back.
